Why smaller is always a trade
Compression buys space by throwing away detail your eye is least likely to miss. Up to a point that costs nothing you can see. Past it, the cost is visible.
Re-encoding runs the footage back through a codec and writes it out with fewer bits per second. Fewer bits means a smaller file — and, past a threshold, fewer bits also means blocking in fast motion, softer edges and banding across gradients.
The curve on the right is the whole story. Quality climbs steeply as you add bitrate, then flattens: beyond the knee, extra megabytes buy almost nothing you can notice. The sweet spot sits right at that bend, and every preset in the table above is tuned to land near it for its target.
Two honest limits sit underneath all of this. The compressor cannot go below the floor your content genuinely needs, and it cannot add detail back — it removes data, it does not upscale or repair. Re-compressing an already-compressed clip loses a little more each pass.

Four knobs that decide the output

Target size or quality mode
Drive by a target file size when a cap is the whole point, or by a quality level when you care more about how it looks than the exact number. The tool shows the estimate either way.
Resolution ladder
Stepping down a rung is the fastest way to lose weight. Keep 1080p for anything full-screen; drop to 720p for feeds and thumbnails where nobody counts the pixels.

What compression can't do
- It can't shrink without some loss. Every lossy pass discards detail. Gentle settings hide it; aggressive ones show blocking, softness and banding. No setting shrinks a file and keeps it pixel-for-pixel identical.
- It can't beat the content's floor. A busy, high-motion clip carries more information than a static one, so it won't shrink as far at the same quality. Below what the footage needs, loss becomes visible.
- It can't add detail back. Compression removes data; it is not an upscaler or a repair tool. Re-compressing an already-compressed file loses a little more each time.
Rule of thumb: the best target is the smallest size that still looks right on the screen it will play on. A phone thumbnail forgives far more than a full-screen hero loop — match the setting to the destination, not to the lowest possible number.

How do I compress a video to fit under 25 MB for email?

Does compressing a video always reduce its quality?
Some quality is always traded, but not always visibly. Gentle settings near the balanced point are close to invisible, while aggressive ones show blocking or softness. You are choosing how much to spend, not whether to spend anything.
Should I lower the resolution or the bitrate to save more space?
