AI compositing. Keyed, comped and graded to the plate.
A compositing department pulls keys by hand, fights spill shot by shot and nudges every edge until the foreground stops looking pasted on. Our AI keys the screen, suppresses the spill and keeps the soft edges in one pass, then matches colour, light wrap and grain to the background plate. A compositor checks every frame, so shots that sit in a vendor queue for weeks come back in a day or two.

What a comp department keys by hand, the model keys in one pass
We are not a VFX lab with faster artists. We are an AI lab: the tedious, per-frame work that fills a vendor’s schedule is done by the model in a single pass, and artists are spent only where judgment matters. The result is the same deliverable, in a day or two instead of weeks.
| The job | Traditional VFX lab | Pixazo AI |
|---|---|---|
| Pulling the key | Several keyers layered and tuned per shot | One AI key with soft edges and spill handled |
| Hair and motion blur | Edge roto and core mattes, frame by frame | Grey-valued edges from the model; an artist checks them |
| Turnaround | Weeks per sequence, queued behind other shows | 24–48h on a standard shot |
| Cost driver | Artist-hours per shot | Shot class; one free test shot gives the number |
Where the artist still matters: the final integration (does the foreground belong in that light), reflective and transparent props, and anything a supervisor would send back. Every frame is checked before it leaves.
What actually comes back
Send the screen plate and the background, or tell us what goes behind the talent, and say whether you want the finished comp or the pieces to comp yourself.
| Deliverable | Format | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Finished comp | EXR / DPX / ProRes, your frame rate and colour space | Foreground keyed and integrated into the background plate, with colour, light wrap and grain matched. |
| Key as alpha | Per-frame EXR with embedded alpha, or PNG sequence | The keyed foreground on its own with a grey-valued matte, for comps you want to own. Delivered through our matte pipeline. |
| Despilled plate | Same as the source | The foreground with screen spill removed and edges recovered, before integration. |
| Screen & monitor inserts | Comped into the plate | Phone, laptop and monitor content tracked and inserted, with reflections and moiré handled. Camera solves come from AI camera tracking. |
| Background options | Your plate, or a new one | Supply the background, or have it built: a clean plate, a set extension, or a generated environment. |
The question that decides the scope: how good is the screen? Evenly lit green or blue with separation from the talent is a standard shot. Patchy screens, heavy spill on skin and wardrobe, or no screen at all are still possible, but the key becomes roto, and we quote it that way.
AI compositing cannot do every shot
A key is only as good as the separation in the plate, and a comp is only as good as the match between the two plates. Where the shoot gave us both, the pass is fast; where it did not, we say so before quoting.
- Lit green and blue screens. Interviews, dialogue, product and stage work in front of an evenly lit screen.
- Hair, fur and motion blur. Edges come out grey-valued, so flyaway hair and fast movement keep their softness instead of a hard cut line.
- Spill on skin and wardrobe. Green and blue cast is removed without shifting skin tone or the colour of the costume.
- Plates that match. When the foreground and background were shot with similar light and lens, integration is colour, light wrap and grain.
- Screen inserts. Phones, laptops and monitors with markers or clear corners.
- Lighting that doesn’t match. A foreground lit from the left on a background lit from the right needs a relight first; see AI video relighting.
- Glass, water and smoke in front of the screen. Transparent and reflective elements are keyed, then finished by a compositor.
- No screen at all. Pulling a subject off a busy background is a roto job, not a key.
- Badly crushed or compressed plates. Low-bitrate footage loses the colour detail a key depends on; restoration may come first.
- Hero shots with interaction. Talent touching, leaning on or casting shadows onto the new background are quoted as full compositing.
What helps most on set: an evenly lit screen, distance between the talent and the screen, tracking markers if the camera moves, and a reference of the background lighting. With those, most shots are a one-pass key.
What moves the number
We do not publish a rate card, because a locked-off interview on a clean screen and a handheld chase on a patchy one are not the same job. These are the drivers; the test shot gives you the actual figure.
| Driver | Cheaper | Dearer |
|---|---|---|
| Screen | Evenly lit, good separation | Patchy, heavy spill, no screen |
| Camera | Locked-off or smooth move with markers | Handheld, no markers |
| Foreground | People and opaque props | Glass, water, smoke, fine transparent detail |
| Deliverables | Key as alpha | Finished comp with a built background |
| Volume | A sequence or a show, priced per shot class | One-off shots |
Faster than a rate card: send one shot, ideally the one with the worst screen. We return the finished comp and a firm per-shot number for that class of work. If you are already being quoted elsewhere, tell us the number you need to land under.
Frequently asked questions
How long does AI compositing take?
24–48 hours on a standard shot, instead of the weeks a keyed sequence usually queues for at a VFX vendor.
Can AI keying handle hair and motion blur?
Yes on most shots. The key is grey-valued rather than binary, so flyaway hair and fast movement keep their soft edges. A compositor checks every frame.
What if my green screen is patchy or there is no screen?
A patchy screen is still keyed, with more artist time. With no screen the subject is pulled by AI rotoscoping instead, and quoted that way.
What formats do you deliver?
The finished comp as EXR, DPX or ProRes in your colour space, and on request the key as a separate alpha and a despilled foreground plate.
Is my footage used to train AI models?
No. Footage is covered by an NDA before anything moves, is never used for training without your written consent, and is deleted on delivery.
How much does AI compositing cost?
We do not publish a rate card. Send one shot free and you get a finished result plus a firm per-shot number for that class of work.
A comp is rarely one line
Subjects without a screen need AI rotoscoping, mismatched light needs AI relighting, and the background often starts as a clean plate. Fire and smoke elements come from AI fire, smoke and explosions. All of it is inside the Pixazo AI Lab: 15 production capabilities, 200+ models, human-finished on every shot.
Send us the shot with the worst screen.
One shot, no charge, no commitment. You get the finished comp, the key as an alpha, and a firm number, and you compare all three against what you have already been quoted.
